INTRODUCTION
It all began on 29th of November 2010 on a shiny day of Tripoli, on the Terrace of Radisson Blu Al Mahary Hotel in Libya.
Me and Mr. Onur Çetinceviz were looking at the beautiful bay area from the 15th floor of the hotel when the General Manager Mr. Chauve stepped in and said that the President of Equatorial Guinea wants to meet with the owner of the hotel.
We noticed that His Excellency Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo was our guest who just checked-in to the Presidential Suite in order to participate African Union Summit 2010 with his delegation.
We asked from the head of his protocol Mr. Evuna for a proper time to see him during his stay with us. The same day he gave us an appointment at 10:00 pm at the executive lounge of the hotel where we had the pleasure to meet him in person for the first time.
The meeting which took about one hour gave us the opportunity to present both companies SUMMA and ONUR to His Excellency .
During the meeting I mentioned to His Excellency President about Hotel, Towers, and other construction projects we have completed in Libya by showing him from the terrace of the hotel while he was mentioning about the satisfaction and the good words he heard from Libyan officials about SUMMA for quality and speed of construction projects the company undertook so far.
We mentioned that although ONUR does not work in Libya, it is a worldwide known road and Infrastructure Company capable of executing fast track projects.
At the end of the meeting the President asked both companies to visit his home country as soon as possible to discuss construction project of a conference halland airport infrastructure whereas both projects were supposed to be done in fast track manner.
After having received such an invitation from thehighest level of a State, we did not even think twice and accepted immediately the invitation to make this first visit which demonstrated typical reflex shown by Turkish contractors which later on turned into a world record fast track design and build construction project from scratch.
On the 6th of December exactly 1 week after our meeting in Tripoli, Me, Mr. Onur Cetinceviz, Mr. Hakan Caka, Mr. Faruk Yıldırım and Mrs. Melkan Tabanlioglu flew to Malabo, Capital of Equatorial Guinea to find out the details about what was needed to be done. On the same day we were asked to visit the job site together with the President.
The moment we were at job site we realized that His Excellency President had concerns about the design and capacity of the existing facilities thus wanted us to tell him what kind of a more proper annex building we could build in 5 months.
He gave us only two parameters;
a. To build a conference hall in such a way that it could be capable to host 60 Heads of States and 5 delegates of each.
b. To finish the building on turn-key basis by the 5th of June 2011.
The next day we returned back to Turkey in order to prepare a concept design for further approval of His Excellency President who asked to meet again on 15th of December 2010.
In 9 days we completed the concept drawings and flew back to Malabo on 16th of December the date when His Excellency President approved all the architectural design works completely.
Then we started thinking about how to build such a huge conference center without having any idea about availability of local goods and services.
Then we found out that the availability of local goods and services necessary to build this project were limited (considering the time constraint we had while we were promising H.E. President) to deliver the project on time with desired quality.
We realized the complexity of the logistics andtook immediate measures to catch the deadline. All departments worked in harmony. 1600 tons of structural steel has been manufactured in a record short timeand shipped to job site for further installation. No need to mention about all other disciplines doing the same where otherwise would be impossible to reach this result.
Taking this opportunity, on behalf of both companies SUMMA and ONUR, I would like to thank all our managers, engineers, workers, subcontractors, material suppliers, logistic companies, local authorities and staff of central office in Istanbul.
Thanks to H.E. President Obiang for his trust in ourselves and in our companies.
